skatepark

Welcome to Sixpenny Handley Skatepark, the perfect destination if our project is successful for skateboarders, rollerbladers, scooterists and BMX riders of all levels. Located in the Sixpenny Handley Recreation Ground. .

Our skatepark currently offers a a half pipe and rail, but we are working to significantly improve on this. Once funding is secured, our park will be designed to cater to all skill levels, from beginners to experts with Skateboards, Scooters or BMXs.

We have a friendly and welcoming community that is always willing to help newcomers learn new tricks and improve their skills. In addition, we will be looking to host events and competitions, so there is always something exciting happening at the park.

So if you're looking for a fun and challenging skateboarding experience, watch this space we will be updating our project and news pages so that you can track progress.

After many years of use, our skatepark is much loved but, limited in who can use it. The half pipe is challenging and the surface around the rail prevents all but the most skilled riders being able to use it. We have a passionate and active local wheeled community of young skaters and want to expand use of the skatepark.

Due to the very limited public transport (3 buses a day and none at weekends), our young people are trapped without mum/dad taxis and would love to have somewhere local that they can freely use. We want to create a skatepark they can use safely and be proud of, whilst making it accessible to all physical abilities and skills. This will enable its use by the wider community benefit, making Sixpenny Handley an even better place to live.

Who will be able to use the Skatepark?

Skateboarders, Scooters, BMXs, In-Line Skates and more

all AGES

The diverse nature of skatepark users creates significant and meaningful bonds both within and across different social groups. For example, our redesigned skatepark might well incorporate young boys on scooters, girls on bicycles, teenage boys street-skateboarding, millennial women on in line skates plus many other variants. It will create a community that is constantly observing, talking, and learning from each other.

Scooters

BEGINNERS to experts

Youngsters love riding scooters, but do not have many options to ride them safely. The rebuilt skatepark will enable them to ride their scooters in a safe environment. You never know, they may even want to learn how to backflip or do a 360s on your scooters? If so you will be spending more time at our skate park. You don’t have to be a professional to pull off some cool tricks on your scooter. Once they get the right stance down, they can start practicing some beginner scooter tricks like the bunny hop and the tailwhip. Before you know it, they’ll be nailing more impressive tricks to show off.

BMXers

Street and park

Freestyle BMX is bicycle motocross stunt riding on BMX bikes. It is an extreme sport descended from BMX racing that consists of five disciplines with street and park being possible in our Skatepark. In June 2017, the International Olympic Committee announced that freestyle park was to be added as an Olympic event to the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Street is the progression of more technical tricks on street obstacles has led to this discipline becoming more divided from other freestyle disciplines. BMX bikes aimed at street riding typically have steeper angles and shorter wheelbases, making them easier to maneuver, but less stable at the higher speeds associated with ramp and dirt riding. Park denotes the BMX discipline of exclusively riding skateparks, often with an emphasis on riding bowl transitions or jump boxes.
